Interior Design Trends 2020

It’s that time of the year in the design world where new design trends emerge set to make waves for the upcoming year and where interior design trends 2020 start making their mark. I’ve rounded up what I believe are significant trends which will become even bigger in 2020.

Dulux Colour of the Year 2020

Starting off with the Dulux Colour of the Year 2020 – Tranquil Dawn described as a soft green-grey. The colour is compared to “the space between the land and sky”. Selected for its calming colour and to help connect with the outdoors and nature. We can all agree we need to step away from our phones more often and reconnect with the outside world. “Against a background of increasing technological power, we want to understand our place in society and how we can make a positive impact on it.” – Dulux

Spending time on your phone/computer can become a silent addiction so making your home space where you look up rather than down and is more important now than ever. In an ever-increasing digital world, it’s about time we reconnected back to nature and connecting with people in person.

I couldn’t agree more with the choice of Dulux’s Colour of the Year and believe it will be a big interior design trend for 2020. Having used soft pale greens in my projects to create a calming and relaxing vibe. Very versatile colour and can be used in many areas of the home. From a trends perspective, this soft green-grey has been seen on many kitchen units all over Instagram signalling that we are moving away from navy blue and the all-white kitchen look.

Tranquil Dawn comes in four colour palettes, taking colours of the morning sky in different seasons; spring, summer, autumn, winter. So you can pick the right shade according to your colour scheme.

Mint Green

Staying with the green theme, mint green has been seen not only in interiors but also in fashion. When fashion has a big trend it generally filters down to the interiors world pretty quickly.

Quite a punchy fun colour it can work really well for children’s bedrooms. An uplifting, fun and bright colour in comparison to Tranquil Dawn which is a calmer colour.

Of course, use this colour in different places like your bathroom, it’s sure to give you a spring in your step first thing in the morning! Interior design trends for 2020 tend to make their appearances early on the previous year.

As many of you know I’m a big fan of colour as they really can transform a room and encourage my clients to embrace colour. Mint green works well with other pastel colours and black.

Horizontals

Horizontals are set to be another big hit for interior design trends for 2020. As seen in several room setups from DFS to Dulux, this trend is set to stay. Painting horizontals can be done a multitude of ways, anything goes as long as it’s horizontal! Let your creativity run free and paint the walls halfway, multiple horizontals, borders or whatever takes your fancy.

Horizontals add interest, give a contemporary touch and feels like the design has been carefully thought out. Personally, I like to pair two or three contrasting colours a bit like the room set up by Dulux below.

Curves

Interior design trends for 2020 come in different shapes and sizes and curves is one of them. They have been seen throughout the year from furniture to re-igniting the 80’s arches. So it comes to no surprise that the Topps Tile of the year Sycan in Midnight blue is curved and making waves already.

We can expect to see more curved shaped sofas, furniture pieces, lozenge shapes in coffee tables, mirrors and more.

Texture

We’ve seen a lot of emphasis on textured furniture and accessories and that seems to be staying with only more brands producing textured furniture like Maison Du Monde‘s sleek range of rattan furniture.

Gone are the gloss white cabinets, 2020 is about adding depth and sensory experience. Textures don’t stop there either, pampas grass although might feel like a summer accessory works great for layering textures.
